AITA for cutting ties with my aunt after discovering she secretly sabotaged my dream job promotion to keep me working at the family business?
I (28F, Sarah) have always known my Aunt Margaret (53F) was… overinvolved. Since my mother passed, Margaret has filled that role, steering me towards taking over her upscale, local real estate agency. I worked for her for five years, but my true passion is corporate strategy. I finally made the break and took a role at a tech conglomerate, excelling to the point of being the front-runner for a massive VP promotion in New York—a life-changing opportunity.
The entire time, Margaret has been passive-aggressive about me “abandoning” the family legacy, often sending me subtly critical emails or making comments about how I’d never be happy in “soul-crushing corporate land.”
A week ago, I found out I didn’t get the promotion. The feedback was vague. Then, yesterday, at a tense family dinner celebrating my cousin’s anniversary (set in the café we always use), Margaret got a little too much wine in her. She pulled me aside and smugly mentioned she was “relieved for me,” admitting she knew one of the hiring VPs (an old college acquaintance) and “casually” mentioned over lunch that I was “still very much committed to the local community and my family responsibilities” and that I “had expressed concerns about uprooting my life.”
I was devastated. She lied. She misrepresented my ambition to secure her own goals. When I confronted her immediately at the table, she argued she did it out of “love” and “to protect my future from crushing burnout.” My father, who is close to Margaret, told me to “forgive her, family comes first, even when they’re misguided.”
Now, I’ve decided to go no-contact with her and have resigned from her business, refusing to even discuss the “legacy” anymore. My family thinks I’m holding a petty grudge.
AITA?
